Some wedding days are built around a long list of traditions. Others feel more intentional when there is room to simplify.

Emily and Don’s wedding at Loring Greenough House in Jamaica Plain was very much the latter. With no wedding party and much of the celebration taking place in one historic setting, the day gave us space to focus on what mattered most: the two of them, their families, and the people who had come together to celebrate with them.

A Wedding at Loring Greenough House

Set in the heart of Jamaica Plain, the historic Loring Greenough House gave us two very different environments without ever having to leave the property.

The character of the house became part of the photographs rather than simply serving as a backdrop. Its interiors offered a quieter setting for portraits, while outside, the grounds created an entirely different atmosphere for the ceremony and celebration.

Emily had mentioned during our planning that photographs of the two of them were especially important to her and that she wanted to take advantage of the interior of the house. That became one of the considerations behind how we approached their timeline.

Instead of trying to fit portraits wherever there happened to be a few free minutes, we made room for them intentionally.

Planning a wedding at Loring Greenough House or elsewhere in Boston? If photography is one of the parts of your day you care about most, your timeline should reflect that. I work with my couples before the wedding to determine where photography fits naturally rather than forcing the day around a shot list. Before the Ceremony

Photography began at 2:00 PM, giving us time inside the house before guests arrived for the ceremony.

Because Emily and Don weren’t having a traditional wedding party, we were able to keep this part of the afternoon focused. After the final preparations, they shared their first look and then had time together for portraits around the property.

That simplicity made a difference.

A first look isn’t necessary for every wedding, but in their case it gave us an opportunity to create portraits before the ceremony without taking them away from their guests later for an extended period of time.

And because we weren’t moving a large wedding party from one location to another, we could work at a pace that felt much more natural.

Why Your Wedding Timeline Matters

Emily and Don’s wedding is also a good example of why I like to talk through the timeline with my couples before the wedding rather than simply receiving a schedule and showing up.

Their ceremony time changed during planning. Their DJ was coordinating dinner, speeches and live music. Their venue had its own logistical considerations. And photography needed to fit alongside all of it.

None of those things are unusual.

A useful photography timeline isn’t about controlling every minute of your wedding. It’s about identifying the moments that matter, giving them enough room, and building enough flexibility that a ten-minute delay doesn’t suddenly become a problem.

For some couples, that means spending more time on getting ready. For others, family photographs are a priority. And for couples like Emily and Don, creating enough room for portraits together can be the better use of that time.

There isn’t one timeline that works for every wedding.

Wedding Photography in Jamaica Plain & Greater Boston

Loring Greenough House provided something I particularly enjoy photographing: a wedding where history, architecture and the people celebrating inside it all contribute to the visual story.

But what stays with you years later won’t only be the photographs that show where you got married.

It will also be the expressions you didn’t see during the ceremony. The way your family gathered around you. The quiet minutes you had together before the celebration started. And what happened once everyone stopped thinking about the schedule and simply enjoyed the night.

Those are the photographs that give the more polished portraits their context.

If you’re planning a Loring Greenough House wedding, a Jamaica Plain wedding, or a celebration elsewhere in Boston or New England, I’d love to hear what you’re creating.
